The Visakhapatnam Police Department has arrested four people in connection with an ongoing investigation into the online sale of marijuana via the Amazon India platform. Three delivery executives from the ecommerce giant are among the four people arrested.
Bhind Police, Madhya Pradesh, which first revealed the trail of marijuana sales through Amazon last week, said in a press release that Cheepurupalli Venkateswara Rao, Jeeru Kumar Swamy, Bijjam Krishna Raju, and Chilakapati Srinivasa Rao had been arrested. Venkateswara Rao works as a van driver for Amazon and Swamy and Raju are Amazon pick-up boys, according to the Bhind Police .
The FIR also mentioned Chilakapati Mohan Raju's name and stated that he is on the run. According to a press release issued by Bhind Police, Suraj Singh Pawaiya, who was arrested in Madhya Pradesh last week, admitted to obtaining the drug from Chilakapati Srinivasa Rao. According to the police, Rao had arranged for a rented room in Visakhapatnam from which he would deliver the drug in Amazon packets weighing 2 kilogrammes each to platform delivery agents.
The arrests were made on Saturday by the Visakhapatnam Police Special Enforcement Bureau based on information from Bhind Police. Marijuana weighing 48 kg, brown cardboard boxes, Amazon covers, and Amazon cello tapes were among the items seized during the arrests. The accused has been charged under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act of 1985.
