Amazon and Apple got hit with $225 million antitrust fine in Italy

Italy's competition watchdog imposed fines totaling $225 million on US tech giants Amazon and Apple on Tuesday for restrictions which penalised sellers of Apple and Beats products.

According to the terms of a 2018 agreement between the companies, only certain resellers were permitted to sell Apple and Beats products on Amazon. It was a violation of European Union rules and it harmed price competition, according to the watchdog.

Both Apple and Amazon have stated that they intend to appeal the fines. The authority fined Amazon 68.7 million euros and Apple 134.5 million euros, ordering the companies to remove the restrictions that prevented retailers selling genuine Apple and Beats products from accessing Amazon. It must be done in a non-discriminatory manner.
