Apple on Dec. 31, 2020 removed 39,000+ games from China App Store. This was the biggest removal of games in a single day.
iOS games need to obtain a Chinese gaming license in order to operate in the country, but Apple skirted this rule for years by hosting unlicensed titles even as Android app stores complied. However, Apple began to enforce the rule in 2020 and gave publishers a Dec. 31, 2020 deadline to obtain the license.
Clearly, a large number of publishers were not able to meet the deadline making games like Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Identity and NBA 2K20 disappear from the platform. It is said that only 74 of the top 1,500 paid games remained following the removals.
