Apple to allow ‘reader’ apps to use external links, if approved

Apple announced that a subset of apps sold on its App Store will be able to link to an external website where users can create or manage their accounts with the app developer.

The change to Apple's App Store Review guidelines only applies to "reader" apps, which are apps designed primarily to provide access to digital content such as magazines, books, audio, music, or video. Apple's plans were first announced in September as part of the company's settlement with a Japanese regulator, the Japan Fair Trade Commission (JFTC), and were expected to arrive in early 2022. The company had previously stated that the changes would be applied globally to all reader apps on the App Store when they went live, but had not specified a specific launch date.
