Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) plans to replace smart cards with a monthly pass system based on face recognition technology (FRT) at the city's metro stations.
If the trial is successful, the Corporation intends to expand the technology to other metro stations, according to BMRCL Managing Director Anjum Parwez. When the technology is implemented, the automatic fare collection (AFC) gates will open automatically when passengers stand in front of them, according to Parwez. Because there is a high demand for monthly passes, BMRCL intends to introduce AI-based FRT, but the Corporation is concerned about misuse because the same card can be used by multiple travellers at different times. Earlier this week, the Corporation also signed an agreement with tech behemoth Google to provide real-time train information. However, it is unclear whether Google will be BMRCL's partner in deploying the FRT in metro stations.
