BSNL Employees Union Express Displeasure Over Reliance Jio Expansion in Ladakh
Employees of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) feel that the Narendra Modi government is favouring the billionaire Mukesh Ambani-owned Reliance Jio by awarding state-funded programs to it, denying a level-playing field to the state-run telecom carrier.
"Jio is the blue-eyed boy of the Modi sarkar (government). It has been selected as a service provider to offer connectivity in all the airports and Indian Railways. It is sheer favouritism," P Abhimanyu, General Secretary of the BSNL Employee Union (BSNLEU) told ETTelecom.
Despite, nearly Rs 600-crore monthly savings on account of voluntary retirement of more than 50% of its employees in February this year, the telco has again delayed May wages to more than three weeks to its existing 70,000 headcount. In addition, less than 50,000 of the telco's contract workers continue to protest as they remain unpaid for about a year.
