The Competition Commission of India (CCI) rejected the Confederation of All India Traders' (CAIT) request for action against ecommerce portal Shopee over allegations of predatory pricing.
According to the CCI's analysis, Shopee is not a major market player, and it is a relatively new entrant in a market with well-established competitors. "...though the allegation is that Shopee is engaging in similar discounting practises as alleged by Amazon and Flipkart, it does not appear to the Commission that Shopee possesses significant market power, much less dominance, at this stage," CCI added. The trade body will almost certainly file an appeal with NCLAT against the order. Shopee's parent company, SEA, has also been in the spotlight after the Centre banned 54 apps last month, including its popular gaming app, Free Fire.
