As reports of Facebook's bias toward the BJP-led Central Government resurface, the Congress party has written to Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook's CEO, demanding an internal investigation into the company's India unit's operations.
"I strongly urge you to conduct an internal investigation into the operation of Facebook India and make the results public." "As the leader of this organisation, it is your responsibility to hold those responsible for betraying our people accountable for their actions," Congress leader Rohan Gupta, who heads the party's social media department, wrote in his letter.
The INC claimed that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in India was "using Facebook as a weapon" to spread hate and fake news, and that India's democracy was "being manipulated by an American technology company." Gupta and another Congress leader, Praveen Chakravarty, spoke at a joint press conference in Delhi, saying that Facebook must not be used as a "weapon by the BJP" that threatens India's unity. Chakravarty, who leads the Congress' Technology and Data cell, stated that the problem is serious and that everyone must work together to solve it.
