E-Commerce giant Amazon enters online pharmacy business

E-commerce giant Amazon will start offering commonly prescribed medication starting Tuesday, including creams come up as well as medications that need to stay cold like insulin.

After launching its own line of over-the-counter drugs in 2019, this is arguably Amazon’s broadest push into the healthcare business to-date, one that could open very large, new revenue opportunities for the company, especially as the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic pushes consumers both toward more remote care and using online channels for all their shopping needs.

This big change in the company now makes itself a direct Challenger retailers such as Walgreens and CVS health that rely on the pharmacies to bring them steady flow of customers.

Amazon also promises to offer discounts of up to 80 per cent on generic drugs for Prime subscribers paying without insurance comparing with other online retailers that are offering discounts of up to 40 per cent on branded medicines.
