Meta admits that Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp fueled the Israel-Palestine conflict

Throughout the May 2021 conflict with Israel, Palestinian users were unfairly targeted by post moderation and technical issues on Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, according to Meta on Wednesday.

According to the tech company's comments to reporters, Arabic content has been hit by post restrictions, hashtag removal, and resharing blocks throughout the crisis, while Hebrew content has remained relatively unaffected. Throughout most of May 2021, Israel and Palestine were engulfed in violence, sparked by Palestinian protests in East Jerusalem over the eviction of six Palestinian families. During the crisis, at least 256 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed. Following the crisis, Meta hired Business for Social Responsibility (BSR), a non-profit organisation dedicated to assessing businesses' social responsibilities, to conduct a due diligence exercise on the impact of the company's processes and policies on the conflict.
