Budget 2026 positions AI as core economic infrastructure, tech leaders say

India’s Union Budget 2026–27 has drawn strong endorsement from AI and technology leaders, who see it as a turning point that embeds artificial intelligence into economic strategy, workforce planning, and global competitiveness.

India’s Union Budget 2026–27 is being widely interpreted by AI researchers and technology leaders as a decisive move from experimentation to execution — positioning artificial intelligence not as a niche innovation pillar, but as foundational economic infrastructure.

Across industry reactions, a consistent theme emerges: the Budget reframes AI from a future aspiration into a present-day growth engine, backed by compute, policy alignment, and workforce readiness.

AI as a national growth driver

The Indian AI Research Organisation (IAIRO) welcomed the Budget’s direction, highlighting continuity and intent in government thinking around advanced technologies.

Dr Amit Sheth, Founding Director of IAIRO, said:

“The Union Budget reinforces India’s commitment to leveraging emerging technologies, particularly AI, as a driver of inclusive and productivity-led growth. Continued focus on initiatives such as the IndiaAI Mission and the National Quantum Mission, along with the announcement of a dedicated committee to assess AI’s impact on jobs and skills, signals a clear intent to mainstream advanced technologies across key sectors while preparing the workforce for the future. These measures align with India’s ambition to expand its share in global services exports by 2047. IAIRO welcomes the Budget’s direction and stands ready to contribute to building a sovereign, responsible and globally competitive AI ecosystem.”

The emphasis on a formal committee to study AI’s impact on employment is being read as a signal of policy maturity — acknowledging both opportunity and disruption.

Removing cost barriers to innovation

Enterprise AI companies were particularly encouraged by measures aimed at reducing infrastructure and compute costs.

Amit Kumar Tyagi, CEO of TrueReach AI, framed the Budget as a structural inflection point:

“The Union Budget 2026 is a clarion call for the ‘Intelligence-First’ era. By proposing a tax holiday until 2047 for cloud services using Indian data centers and utilizing the ₹10,300 crore IndiaAI Mission to provide compute at a subsidized rate, the government has eliminated the cost barriers to high-end innovation.”

He also pointed to the strategic importance of sector-specific AI deployment:

“At TrueReach AI, we are particularly energized by the Economic Survey’s shift toward a bottom-up, sector-specific AI strategy. This aligns perfectly with our ‘Entropy’ platform, which already automates 90% of the SDLC.”

Tyagi argued that the government’s ambition to secure a 10% share of global services exports by 2047 marks a repositioning of India’s role in the global tech economy:

“We are no longer just an outsourcing hub; we are becoming an ‘AI Factory’ hub.”

Sovereign AI and workforce inclusion

Similar views were echoed by Srikanth Chakkilam, CEO and Executive Director of Covasant Technologies, who described the Budget as a roadmap for systemic transition:

“The Union Budget 2026 is a definitive roadmap for India’s transition from a digital-first to an intelligence-first nation.”

He highlighted the scale of public AI infrastructure already in place:

“The expansion of the IndiaAI Mission, which has already deployed 38,000 GPUs, provides the critical infrastructure needed to move beyond experiments to large-scale, sovereign AI deployment.”

Chakkilam also underscored the importance of inclusivity and skills:

“The announcement of the ‘Bharat Vistar’ multilingual AI tool and the Education to Employment Standing Committee is particularly significant. It shows a dual commitment to innovation and inclusive growth.”

From optimism to preparedness

Cybersecurity and AI governance perspectives reinforced the view that the Budget is about readiness rather than rhetoric.

Tarun Wig, Co-Founder and CEO of Innefu Labs, described Budget 2026 in reformist terms:

“Budget 2026 is like a ‘Reform Express,’ clearly indicating India’s transition from technology optimism to technology preparedness.”

He welcomed the government’s balanced approach:

“The government’s move to form a high-powered committee to assess the effect of Artificial Intelligence on the services sector is a sign of a well-thought-out, reform-oriented strategy that gives equal importance to innovation, employment, and skill development.”

Wig also emphasised responsible adoption:

“The budget is a major step towards the adoption of AI in a responsible manner that will help build trust, resilience, and sustainable growth in the growing digital services ecosystem in India.”

A common signal from industry

Across research institutions, enterprise AI firms, and cybersecurity leaders, Budget 2026 is being read as a convergence point — where compute, policy, talent, and governance begin to move in sync.

If execution matches intent, industry leaders believe India could shift from being a consumer of AI platforms to a producer of globally competitive, sovereign intelligence — with AI embedded not just in technology, but in the economic architecture itself.
